Two English professors at The University of Alabama, Sarah Hughes and Wells Addington, hosted an open mic night at The Monarch Expresso Bar, that was presented by the English department at the University. They took the first 10 people that signed up, and gave them the chance to perform any type of poetry, or story they wanted to. It gave locals an opportunity to show their work and perform in front of a crown.
Hughes started the session by branding piece from her book called “The Disappearing Act”, which was released Tuesday.
The 10 volunteers then went on stage afterwards. They had five to seven minutes to perform, but if there was extra time at the end, anyone from the crowd could get on stage and perform as well.
“It’s nice to have a place where you can meet likeminded people, and showcase your hobbies in a town that never comes to mind when you think of creative arts”, Hughes stated.
Since the event went so well The English department plans continues to meet once a month at the same place and time, at 7p.m. at Monarch Expresso Bar.
